Dr. (Prof.) Arvind Kumar

Dr. Arvind Kumar is one of the world's leading Robotic and Thoracic Surgeons. He is the first surgeon to start Robotic Chest Surgery in India at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi in June 2008. He has embodied a benchmark in the history of Medical Sciences by delivering 36 years of ordained service to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences - one of the best medical institutions in our country.

Dr. Kumar is presently the Director of Institute of Robotic Surgery and the Chairman of Centre for Chest Surgery & Lung Transplantation at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. It is under his aegis that Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has become Asia's first hospital to deliver successful Robotic Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Kumar did his MBBS from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi in 1976. He also completed his Masters in Surgery from AIIMS in 1984. He was recommended for Sir Hira Lal Gold Medal for being the best post-graduate of the year in the department. Due to his excellent performance, he was immediately appointed as Senior Resident in the Department which he completed in 1988.

Dr. Kumar had chosen General Thoracic Surgery as his area of special interest and started doing open thoracic surgery regularly for lung as well as esophageal diseases. His zest for excelling in this field took him to all the renowned Thoracic Surgery centres around the globe.

Dr. Kumar, for the last 24 years, as a faculty member in the Department of Surgical Disciplines, had been regularly organizing CME Programmes, workshops and symposia on various topics of interest to the surgical community. His passion for spreading knowledge made him one of the best Professor's of Surgery at AIIMS.

His Professional eminence includes memberships of Association of Surgeons of India and its Delhi State Chapter, Indian Society of Oncology, Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgeons, Indian Association of Surgical Oncology, Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology, Association of UICC fellows (Geneva), American College of Surgeons, International College of Surgeons, Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India and many more.

Dr. Kumar has attended more than 50 International and over 300 National Conferences so far. He has been a guest lecturer and presented papers in most of them. He has spread his immense knowledge via a huge range of chapters in various books on Thoracoscopy, Lung Transplantation, VATS and Chest Surgery. Further, he has shared his vast body of clinical work with his peers from around the globe through over 100 articles in National & International Medical Journals.

Dr. Jitendra Maheshwari

Dr. Jitendra Maheshwari is an Orthopedic Surgeon at Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science & Research, New Delhi. He did his MBBS from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi in 1979, and Masters in Surgery in Orthopaedics from the same Institute in 1982. He subsequently did his registrarship from Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) hospital, New Delhi in 1983-86. He was appointed to the faculty of AIIMS in 1986, where he worked for 12 years.

He was awarded the commonwealth fellowship in 1992, during which he worked at different hospitals in United Kingdom in units specializing in knee & shoulder surgery. He was also awarded the Johnson and Johnson fellowship from the Indian Orthopaedic Association. During his long tenure at AIIMS, he focused on knee and shoulder surgery. He also authored the landmark book 'Essential Orthopaedics' which is widely acclaimed all over the country.

He left AIIMS in 1998, and worked at various hospitals of Delhi such as Delhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopeadics (DITO) and Max hospital. Presently he is with the Joint Disease Clinic of Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, New Delhi and Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science & Research, New Delhi. He is also the director of the Knee and Shoulder clinic, New Delhi.

Over the years he has vast experience in knee surgery, including joint replacement, arthroscopy, trauma and reconstructive surgery.

Besides his famous book 'Essential Orthopaedics', he has a number of publications in reputed journals to his credit. He is also frequently invited as a speaker at National and International conferences.

Dr. Ambrish Mithal

Dr. Ambrish Mithal is the Chairman & Head of Endocrinology & Diabetes Division at Medanta, the Medicity, Gurgoan, NCR, where he has established one of India's premier diabetes and endocrinology centres.

Dr. Mithal was the first DM in Endocrinology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (1987), and subsequently served on the faculty at Sanjay Gandhi PGI, Lucknow (1988-1998) where he was instrumental in setting up the Department of Endocrinology. He served as a Senior consultant, Endocrinology and Diabetes at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi (1998-2009).

Dr. Mithal is Past President, Endocrine Society of India. He is a board member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF, Switzerland) where he also chairs the Nutrition Working Group of the Committee of Scientific Advisors and the Asia Pacific Advisory Council. He is the founder, Past President and currently Chief Advisor to the Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ISBMR).

Dr. Mithal has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships. Prominent among these are the Fogarty Fellowship (Harvard Medical School), in 1992-93, Japan International Cooperation Agency Fellowship (Japan) in 1996, Boy Frame award of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (Adult Working Group) in 2004, IOF Amgen Health Professionals Award (for ISBMR) in 2005. He has also received IMA distinguished service and Doctor of the Year awards.

Dr. Mithal has published numerous research papers, reviews and book chapters. He is on the editorial board of several national and international journals and is the Editor-in-Chief of Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism. In 2012 he received the Springer citation prize for his paper on global Vitamin D status.

His current areas of research interest include vitamin D nutrition in Indians, prevention of osteoporotic fractures, evaluation of newer therapies for diabetes, post transplant diabetes, diabetes and heart disease, and metabolic impact of bariatric surgery. Dr. Mithal is also national coordinator, steering committee member and principal investigator in several diabetes, thyroid and osteoporosis trials. His primary clinical focus is improvement in delivery of chronic care in the Indian setting.

Dr. Mithal is involved in several social and public awareness activities. In addition to “Hospital Guide Foundation”, he is involved with initiatives on diabetes and pregnancy with Jagran Pehel; nutrition and health monitoring of students from Vidygyaan school (Nadar Foundation); and a campaign to spread awareness about healthy food in hotels. He is on the panel of experts for Prevention magazine, Guardian Health, Women's Health and other publications.

Dr. Arun Prasad

Dr. Arun Prasad, FRCS, FRCSEd, MS (MAMC) MBBS (AFMC) is a Senior Consultant Surgeon - Minimal Access Surgery (Gastrointestinal, Robotic, Bariatric & Thoracoscopy) Apollo Hospital, New Delhi

He is one of the 'modern' general surgeons, who does conventional and minimal access surgery in chest and abdomen. He has been a worldwide pioneer of laparoscopic surgery since it was introduced in United Kingdom in 1989. He has also pioneered robotic surgery at Apollo Hospital.

He is the vice president of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgeons (IAGES) and also vice president of Obesity & Metabolic Surgery Society of India (OSSI). He is also the Director for Research and Technology of International College of Robotic Surgeons (ICRS).

He has experience of over 7000 minimal access surgeries and has been a senior consultant at Apollo Hospital, New Delhi since 1996 after his return from UK where he was trained and also worked as a Surgeon.
